The apostrophe is perhaps the most misunderstood grammatical mark in the English language. It has two purposes: to indicate possession or a omitted letter (s) in contractions. There is the poetic "apostrophe" used to address something that cannot respond or is not present to respond (Remember Juliet's famous "Oh Romeo, oh Romeo?").
